From Kovilpatti to Building a Technology Company

Ask people where India's next technology company will come from and most will name a city with a metro line, a startup district and a coffee shop full of pitch decks.

We'd like to add another answer: Kovilpatti.

Kovilpatti is a town in Thoothukudi district, Tamil Nadu. Across the state it's better known for kadalai mittai than for circuit boards or cloud architecture. It's also where Incrix Techlutions is headquartered, and where we've chosen to build a technology company in Kovilpatti that designs software, ships hardware, builds brands and trains students. We didn't choose it to make a point about geography. We started building where we were, and we kept building.

This is the story of that choice, and why we think small-town India is becoming one of the most important places to build.

Two dates, one direction

Incrix emerged in 2019. It was fuelled by passion and a clear idea of what we wanted it to be: a nexus of innovation, where tech meets purpose. The work came first. The paperwork followed in June 2021, when we were incorporated as a limited liability partnership, Incrix Techlutions LLP.

We keep those dates separate on purpose. 2019 is when we started building. 2021 is when that building became a registered company. Since then we've been recognised by Startup India and DPIIT, the national framework that identifies and supports startups.

What it means to be a technology company in Kovilpatti

There are a few common assumptions about a startup in Kovilpatti, or in any small town. Here's how they compare with what building here actually involves.

None of this means geography doesn't matter. It means geography isn't destiny.

Today our team of fifteen covers embedded architecture, AI back-end development, full-stack engineering, product design, brand and graphic design, editing and content, sales, and administration. That's a lot of disciplines for one small-town office, and it works because the disciplines depend on each other. We describe how that works day to day in Inside Team Incrix.

Small-town India is no longer the exception

For a long time, starting up away from the metros was treated as brave or naïve. The numbers now say otherwise. The Press Information Bureau's release on India's startup revolution notes that over 51% of the startups emerging in India come from Tier II and Tier III cities.

That's a structural shift. Tamil Nadu has its own push too: StartupTN exists to grow the state's startup ecosystem beyond a single capital city. Put those together and a tech startup in Tamil Nadu that sits hours from Chennai isn't unusual anymore. It's part of a pattern.

Talent was never concentrated in a few cities. Opportunity was. That's the part that's changing.

The advantages nobody puts in a pitch deck

Building from a smaller town comes with real advantages, and they're rarely discussed:

• You're closer to the actual conditions. Patchy connectivity, unstable power and cost-sensitive customers aren't hypothetical personas here. They're Tuesday. Designing for them is the default, not an afterthought.
• Focus is easier. There are fewer distractions, fewer events to be seen at, and more time to actually build.
• Your work has to carry your reputation. No famous address will vouch for you, so the product has to. That's a healthy pressure.
• Local talent is underestimated. Many capable engineers and designers never get the chance to work on ambitious products without moving away. A company that brings that work to them has an edge.

The trade-offs are real, too

It would be dishonest to pretend there are none. Investor and industry networks are thinner outside the big cities. Some specialised skills are harder to hire locally. And a Kovilpatti address still surprises people who expect serious technology to come from somewhere else.

Our approach is practical. Where we can't hire a skill, we train it. Where people doubt the address, we show them shipped work. Where a network is thin, we build a community. What we've built from here

Starting in 2019 with an idea, we've grown into a company that runs five streams under one roof:

• Software. Products and platforms on cost-effective, maintenance-friendly serverless architecture, including our own AI learning platform, Classory.
• Automation. Edge-native hardware engineered in India, from embedded firmware and multi-layer PCBs to on-device AI and connected cloud. Our shipping boards include the Horizon Gen 1, Twinedge Dev V2, Horizon Dev-2 C6 and Hexon Atom C6.
• Branding. 1000+ projects delivered, with a 4.9/5 rating.
• Education. Incrix University has trained 50K+ students across 50+ courses, with 10+ partner institutions.

How to build a technology company from a small town

We don't have a formula. We do have a few principles we'd share with anyone building a startup from a small town anywhere in India.

1. Solve a problem you can seeYou have a close view of problems metro founders only read about. Build for them. Real constraints make better products.
2. Train the talent you can't findIf a skill isn't available locally, teach it. Training is a whole stream for us. Incrix University has trained 50K+ students, and any small-town company can apply the same instinct to its own team.
3. Let shipped work do the convincingA working board, a live platform or a finished brand says more than any claim about where you're based.
4. Build in public, build a communitySharing what you learn attracts collaborators, students, customers and future teammates, wherever they are.
5. Use the national and state frameworksRecognition under Startup India and DPIIT, and state programmes such as StartupTN, exist precisely to widen who gets to build.

The next technology companies will come from everywhere

We're proud to be a technology company in Kovilpatti. Being from Kovilpatti is not a gimmick, and it's not a handicap. Towns like ours have always had the people. What's changing is that the tools, the infrastructure and the confidence to build here have finally caught up.
